History: of coin images
Arethusa,
in Greek mythology, a nymph who gave her name to a spring in Elis and to another
on the island of Ortygia, near Syracuse..
The river god Alpheus fell in love with Arethusa, who was in the retinue of Artemis. Arethusa fled
to Ortygia, where she was changed into a spring. Alpheus, however, made his way beneath the
sea and united his waters with those of the spring. According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Book V,
Arethusa, while bathing in the Alpheus River, was seen and pursued by the river god in human form.
Artemis changed her into a spring that, flowing underground, emerged at Ortygia.
In an earlier form of the legend, it was Artemis, not Arethusa, who was the object of the river
god’s affections and who escaped by smearing her face with mire, so that he failed to recognize her.
The story probably originated from the fact that Artemis Alpheiaia was worshiped in both Elis and
Ortygia and also that the Alpheus in its upper part runs underground.

in Greek Mythology. Dolphins, Poseidon and Apollo’s sacred animals are one of the most
lovely sea creatures as well as a. symbol of friendship and solidarity.
Dolphins, the playful charmers of the ocean, have long held a special place in the hearts of Greeks.
The Dolphin is an animal which is sacred to Dionysus and Apollo.
The reason for Dionysus' association with Dolphins stems from when he was at Naxos headed for Asia
a group of pirates who planned to sell him into slavery.
Dionysus caused ivy to grow all over the ship and he turned all the pirates (with the exception of the
helmsman) into Dolphins.  This act is when he started being worshipped as a god.
This is the  reason for Dolphins being important to Dionysius.
While Dolphins are the sacred animal of Dionysius, Eros is often shown riding on the back of one.
This may be  because his mother Aphrodite came from the sea and thus Eros may have had some
affiliation with sea animals.  It is however stated nowhere.
DELPHIN
was a dolphin-shaped sea daimon in the service of the god Poseidon.
When his master was wooing the Nereid Amphitrite and she fled, Delphin was sent to find the nymph
and persuade her to agree to the marriage. For his service Poseidon placed the dolphin amongst the
stars as the constellation Delphinus.
"The Delphines (Dolphins) both rejoice in the echoing shores and dwell in the deep seas, and there is
no sea without Delphines (Dophins); for Poseidon loves them exceedingly, inasmuch as when he was
seeking Amphitrite the dark-eyed daughter of Nereus who fled from his embraces, Delphines
(the Dolphins) marked her hiding in the halls of Okeanos (Oceanus) and told Poseidon; and the god of
the dark hair straightway carried off the maiden and overcame her against her will.
Her he made his bride, queen of the sea, and for their tidings he commended his kindly attendants
and bestowed on them exceeding honour for their portion."
