The Mauryan Empire was founded by Chandragupta Maurya (c.321-297 BCE) and encompassed almost all the Subcontinent. The Edicts of Ashoka, issued by Ashoka (268-232 BCE), proclaim his adherence to Buddhist ”Dharma“ (Law) and were inscribed on pillars and rocks across modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. These were placed in public places and were meant for everyone to read, espousing social and moral precepts rather than specific religious practices. The Lion Capital on one these pillars is today, the National Emblem of India. The Punch Marked Coinage was an indigenous Indian innovation, distinct from the invention of coinage elsewhere.
