This is a genuine ancient Roman bronze coin struck during the reign of
    Probus.
Probus, like many of the other ”Illyrian“ or ”Barracks“ Emperors, who succeeded in holding together the empire at the end of third century CE, was from tough Western Balkan peasant stock, the modern day former Yugoslavia, especially Serbia. Rising through the ranks of the military during the reigns of Valerian & Gallienus, despite their short reigns they can be credited with saving the empire for another 100 years or more.
Probus’s six-year reign is impressively long, given that Probus delivered Gaul from the ravages of the Germans, pursued them across the Rhine & everywhere defeated them. His operating theory was that soldiers should never be idle, even in times of peace & employed them in various useful works such as building roads & canals in Egypt & planting vineyards in Gaul. Indeed, Probus has been called the father of the wine industry, for his devotion to the craft. The soldiers did not appreciate being used as slaves, however; in 282, they proclaimed a new emperor & put Probus to death.
During The Age of Chaos from 235-284, no fewer than 25 would-be emperors claimed the throne. The coinage in this period suffered accordingly, with quality, size, weight, & fineness all adversely affected & bronze replacing silver as the metal used.
