Description
The Royal Ordnance Corps evolved from the "Board of Ordnance" led by the "Master General of Ordnance" which was done away with in 1855. The responsibility of the Corps was the maintenance of all ordnance including small arms and ammunition. They were also responsible for the repair of individual equipment and uniforms, as well as mechanized equipment such as tanks and other tracked vehicles.Featured here is a wonderful, albeit salty four pocket service tunic that belonged to a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps during World War II. The tunic features standard olive gabardine material, with a full compliment of Royal Army Ordnance Corps brass buttons. The insignia on the epaulettes denote the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, normally a battalion-level officer. The lapels are void of the standard Ordnance Corps insignia. The left breast features the following ribbon bars: 1939-1945 Star, Burma Star, Defense Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, and the General Service Medal 1918 (ribbon bars only, no medals included). The uniform is fully lined, but does show quite a bit of wear. The tailor's label indicates that the uniform was tailored by Hector Powe of Regent Street (London). Unfortunately I cannot locate a name, or a size, although the uniform does fit rather loosely on a medium-sized mannequin form. Missing the cloth belt. Overall, an interesting uniform that belonged to a relatively high ranking officer in the British army.
The uniform remains in fair condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. There is quite a bit of moth damage, especially on the back of the uniform, as seen in the pictures. The polished lining shows ample wear, especially in the armpit area, a strong indication of long period use. As mentioned, no collar insignia or cloth belt is present. Please see the pictures for more detail.
